Holden Beach in the Fall: The Season We Can't Wait to Share

There's a morning in early fall when you walk out onto the deck with your coffee and realize the island has changed. The air is cooler. The light is softer and more golden. And the beach, the same wide stretch of sand that was dotted with tents all summer, is almost entirely yours.

We love summer here. But if you ask those of us who live on Holden Beach which season is our favorite, most of us will tell you quietly that it's this one.

          What changes after Labor Day

The pace, mostly. There's no wait for a table at dinner. No hunting for a spot on the sand. The island exhales, and everyone on it does too.

What doesn't change is the ocean. The water holds onto its summer warmth, often well into October, so the kids are still in the waves while the grown-ups finally get to sit down.

A few things that are simply better in the fall

           The walks.

Long, cool, unhurried ones. You can go a mile down the beach and pass only a handful of people (and a lot of shorebirds).

           The sky.

This is our favorite secret. In the fall and winter months, the sun shifts so you can watch it both rise and set over the water from the back deck. Coffee at one end of the day, a glass of wine at the other, same chair.

           The shelling.

Fewer footprints means more left for you to find at low tide.

           The fishing.

Fall is the season anglers wait all year for on this coast.

           The evenings.

Cool enough for a sweatshirt, a hot tub, and a long dinner where nobody is in a hurry to get up from the table.

Who a fall week is made for

Grandparents who want real time with the grandkids, not a crowded version of it. Families on fall break. The Thanksgiving gathering that finally has enough room for everyone. Friends who have been saying "we should do a trip" for years. And anyone who can work from anywhere and would rather do it with an ocean view.

The same house, with more room to breathe

Fall isn't a lesser version of summer here. It's the same oceanfront home, the same private boardwalk to the sand, the same long table. What you get in addition is the quiet, the margin, and the space to slow down enough to really see the people you came with.

          Where to stay this fall

For fall 2026, Keys in the Conch Shell is open and ready for you. The private oceanfront pool can be heated on request, so the kids can keep swimming long after the air turns crisp, and the hot tub is right there for the grown-ups once the sun goes down.

And for those of you planning ahead (we see you, and we love you for it), we have some news. For the last four years, Sunshine in My Soul has only been open for summer stays. Beginning in June 2027, we're opening it year-round, which means fall, winter, and spring on the oceanfront are finally on the table there too.

If a slower season sounds like what your family needs, take a look at our fall dates. We'd love to share our favorite season with you.

There's a moment on the Holden Beach bridge that every returning family knows. You crest the top, the Intracoastal Waterway opens up beneath you, the ocean stretches across the whole horizon, and somebody in the back seat goes quiet. (Usually a teenager. It may be the only time all week.)

We felt it the first time we drove over as a family, and we still feel it now that we live here. Mark and I bought our first home on the island in 2015, and in 2024 we moved here for good. So when people ask us why families choose Holden Beach over the bigger, busier beaches up and down the coast, we have a long answer. Here's the short version.

It's a beach town that stayed a beach town

There are no high-rises on Holden Beach. No boardwalk strip, no neon, no towers throwing shade across the sand by mid-afternoon. In fact, there are no hotels on the island-only homes & condos. Building heights are capped, so when you look down the beach you see houses, dunes, and sky.

Most of the shops and restaurants sit just over the bridge on the causeway, which leaves the island itself quiet. Kids ride bikes & golf carts. Families walk to get ice cream after dinner. Nobody is in a hurry, and after a day or two, you aren't either.

It's been named one of the best family beaches in America more than once, and the reason is simple. Holden Beach never tried to become something else.

Eight miles of room to spread out

The island runs about eight miles end to end, and the beach is wide. Even in the middle of July, your family has space.

That matters more than it sounds like it should. It means the grandparents can settle into their chairs with a book, the little ones can dig at the water's edge, and the big kids can throw a football without landing it on a stranger's towel. Everyone is doing their own thing, and everyone is still together.

Sunrise and sunset, from the same spot

Here's something most first-time visitors don't know. Holden Beach faces south, running east to west, where most East Coast beaches run north to south. So in the fall and winter months, you can watch the sun come up over the ocean with your coffee and watch it go down over the ocean that same evening. Same deck. Same chair, if you like. It's one of the reasons we love the island so much in the cooler months. The beach is emptier, the walks are longer, and the sunrises & sunsets are something you have to see for yourself.

The traditions your kids will ask about next year

Every family that comes back has a list. These are the ones we hear most.

All summer long, the island gathers near the bridge with lawn chairs and coolers for free live music. Toddlers dance. Grandparents dance. It's as small-town as it gets, and it's wonderful.

          The sea turtles.

Loggerhead turtles nest on our beach every summer, and the volunteers of the Holden Beach Turtle Watch look after every nest. Spotting a marked nest on a morning walk never gets old, and their summer Turtle Talks are a favorite with kids.

The ice cream is homemade and the flavors are ones you won't find anywhere else. When our extended family is here, they visit multiple times a day. We're not kidding. The flavors change that often, and they are that good!

This is the question we get more than any other, so consider this a preview. (We'll be going deep on local restaurants in the weeks ahead.)

, fire up the grill, and eat outside with the ocean in front of you. Honestly, that's the meal most families remember.

What families are really coming for

The beach is beautiful. The restaurants are good. But after more than ten years of welcoming families here, we've learned that neither one is the reason people rebook the same week, year after year.

They come back because Holden Beach is the place where their family slows down enough to actually see each other.

The long dinner where nobody looks at a phone. The puzzle that takes over the porch table by Tuesday. Grandparents telling stories the grandkids have never heard. Cousins who see each other once a year and become best friends by the second day.

That's what this island does. We've watched it happen more times than we can count, and it still gets us. It happened for our family. That's how we got hooked on this place.

          Come see it for yourself

We'll be here every week with more of what we've learned from living on this island: where to eat, what to do, when to come, and the little things you'd only know if a friend told you.
