Holden Beach in the Fall: The Season We Can't Wait to Share

There's a morning in early fall when you walk out onto the deck with your coffee and realize the island has changed. The air is cooler. The light is softer and more golden. And the beach, the same wide stretch of sand that was dotted with tents all summer, is almost entirely yours.

We love summer here. But if you ask those of us who live on Holden Beach which season is our favorite, most of us will tell you quietly that it's this one.

What changes after Labor Day

The pace, mostly. There's no wait for a table at dinner. No hunting for a spot on the sand. The island exhales, and everyone on it does too.

What doesn't change is the ocean. The water holds onto its summer warmth, often well into October, so the kids are still in the waves while the grown-ups finally get to sit down.

A few things that are simply better in the fall

  1. The walks. Long, cool, unhurried ones. You can go a mile down the beach and pass only a handful of people (and a lot of shorebirds).
  2. The sky. This is our favorite secret. In the fall and winter months, the sun shifts so you can watch it both rise and set over the water from the back deck. Coffee at one end of the day, a glass of wine at the other, same chair.
  3. The shelling. Fewer footprints means more left for you to find at low tide.
  4. The fishing. Fall is the season anglers wait all year for on this coast.
  5. The evenings. Cool enough for a sweatshirt, a hot tub, and a long dinner where nobody is in a hurry to get up from the table.

Who a fall week is made for

Grandparents who want real time with the grandkids, not a crowded version of it. Families on fall break. The Thanksgiving gathering that finally has enough room for everyone. Friends who have been saying "we should do a trip" for years. And anyone who can work from anywhere and would rather do it with an ocean view.

The same house, with more room to breathe

Fall isn't a lesser version of summer here. It's the same oceanfront home, the same private boardwalk to the sand, the same long table. What you get in addition is the quiet, the margin, and the space to slow down enough to really see the people you came with.

Where to stay this fall

For fall 2026, Keys in the Conch Shell is open and ready for you. The private oceanfront pool can be heated on request, so the kids can keep swimming long after the air turns crisp, and the hot tub is right there for the grown-ups once the sun goes down.

And for those of you planning ahead (we see you, and we love you for it), we have some news. For the last four years, Sunshine in My Soul has only been open for summer stays. Beginning in June 2027, we're opening it year-round, which means fall, winter, and spring on the oceanfront are finally on the table there too.

If a slower season sounds like what your family needs, take a look at our fall dates. We'd love to share our favorite season with you.
